Whether you need daily visits to help you manage your day-to-day life and health conditions, or just a weekly therapy session, preparing yourself and your home for your home health specialists can ensure that this type of care is successful for you. These tips can help.

Tip #1: Create a Care Closet

A care closet is a necessity, especially if you have multiple care providers coming in each week. This can be an actual closet, a cabinet, or a storage box. All the items that you need for basic care should be neatly stowed in this location.

For example, the care closet may contain your medications, equipment needed for physical therapy, wound management supplies, or even cleaning supplies if you have a daily living specialist that comes to help you with household chores. Keep an inventory list taped to the door or lid of the care closet so items can be replenished before they run out. This is also a good location to keep your medication list and emergency contact information.

Tip #2: Keep a List

Between visits, maintain a running list of everything you will need help with at your next home care visit. This may include routine chores such as replacing a light bulb, or it may have provider-specific items on it, such as asking a therapist for help with an exercise or routine.

Keep the list somewhere easy to see so it isn't forgotten during the excitement and busyness of the visit. A dry erase board on the fridge is an excellent option. Keeping it in the same place is also a good idea, because this helps foster the habit of looking it over each visit. Care providers will become used to checking it when they enter your home.

Finally, make a detailed map of your daily routines for your providers. This may include the times when you normally eat, take medications, and exercise or do therapy work. Writing down these routines is especially helpful if you have an interim care provider covering for your normal provider, or if your providers tend to change throughout the week. If you have a provider that cooks for you or serves you meals, you may also want to include a meal plan and allergy list with the routines.
